Political Cartoons in the Age of COVID-19: Entry 3

As of last week, I believe that my project is complete. Now that it is finally done, I am relieved that it is, in fact, done. Granted, I liked the topic of this project, and enjoyed gathering and categorizing political cartoons, but I am glad that I do not have to work on it anymore. My motivation to finish the project was wearing thin, and I do not believe that I could have been able to motivate myself to FINISH THE THING if I had waited even two more days to get it all done. Besides that, the Wix site design interface kept glitching out every time I uploaded a picture, which hampered my productivity severely.

I am not entirely sure if the digital medium was a core part of the project or just an afterthought. A gallery can take many forms, in both the digital and non-digital format. However, an online gallery is generally easier to absorb than a physical gallery if it is designed well enough, and I believe I have done that.

If could go back and do this project differently, I probably would not change that much. Unfortunately, I do not exactly know where I could do better for a project such as this one, and I doubt I could motivate myself to change it that much. If I could convince myself to, I probably include a sentence or two analyzing each political cartoon.

My interactions with Ms. Smith on this project have mostly been about sharing articles depicting the value of political cartoons, rather than her sending me sources for political cartoons. Political cartoons were something I had resolved to collect myself. However, the readings Ms. Smith sent me helped motivate me to complete my project.

All in all, I am not entirely sure how I think this project has changed my perception of “doing” history. Doing this project certainly made it seem easier, but the importance of “doing” history still remains nebulous to me.

Xander, I have admired your tireless commitment to your project. And I appreciate that you realized that the 'source gathering' I did for you all was primarily an effort to help you contextualize your projects -- to understand the larger conversations going on about the overall topics you students decided to take up here. Definitely, my intent was to leave the gathering of primary source 'stuff' to you all.

I know might sound a bit maddening or, at the very least, counter-intuitive for me to say, but it is true: my goodness, I am sure am glad that the importance of doing history is still nebulous to you. It is my view that the importance of doing history is somethin…
